Sanders Smokers win fastball top spot
The local men’s fastball regular season has come to an end with the Sanders Smokers taking the league title.
They beat Exeter Sporting Goods in a best of three final series played on July 1 at Lumberman’s Ballpark.
Many fans made the games part of their Canada Day celebrations and came out to cheer the teams on.
Still hot from their league win, the Smokers earned third place and a $350 cash prize at a ball tournament in Spences Bridge on the July 4 weekend.
The team was just two runs away from making it to the finals, losing to the Shuswap team that was a mix of players from Canim Lake and Williams Lake.
Smokers pitcher, Reg Hooper, was named Most Valuable Pitcher for the tournament.
There will be one last chance to see hometown fastball action on Aug. 15 and 16 when the Smokers host their own tournament at Lumberman’s Ballpark.

Hint of
patriotism on 108 links
A touch of the Canada Day celebrations was evident on the 108 Mile golf course last week as some men’s club golfers brandished maple leaf flags on their carts.
Under bright sunny skies, John McNeil tied with Leonard Van Dremmelin for the overall low gross and shot the only deuce of the day, while his brother, Dean McNeil, was the low net winner.
The Tombstone Classic will be the next big event on the 108 club calendar, followed by championships, which will be held Aug. 8-9. Sign-up is in the pro shop.
