MP resolving Work-Share issue

To the editor:
Regarding the Aug. 19 article, “Work-Sharing not working,” (Joan Silver) I would like the opportunity to set the record straight.
First and foremost, the Work-Sharing program has been a largely successful project that has benefited many Canadian workers. However, in this instance, Gary Hill, manager of the Chasm Saw Mill, contacted my office on Aug. 11 to inform me that some of his employees had not received payment in a timely fashion.
My case worker set to work immediately to solve this issue and has subsequently revamped the process so that all information is now processed electronically.
As of Aug. 24, all payments will reach Chasm Saw Mill employees the following week.
I must also take issue with the reported statement by Mr. Marty Gibbons, president of United Steel Workers Local 1-417 that “his office tried to contact McLeod several times and neither she nor any of her office staff returned his calls.”
Simply put, no calls or messages were received in my 100 Mile House, Kamloops or Ottawa offices from Mr. Gibbons with regard to the problem at the Chasm West Fraser Mill. Rather than playing politics, in these difficult economic times, we need to work together to rectify problems as they arise.
