Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow

A campaign targeting winter driving preparedness had to be cancelled — because of snow.
The Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) and RCMP-sponsored roadside speed check with educational and enforcement activities were planned for Oct. 29. However, it was slated on the very day of the first serious snowfall in the 100 Mile House area.
Phil Doddridge, Interior Roads quality manager, says the snow started to fall around 2 a.m. and the company had crews out clearing roads immediately.
“It was a mess for us,” he says, adding that on the positive side “everybody was driving a little better today.”
Semi-trailers had problems on icy hills and Doddridge notes the problem was they didn’t have chains or, if they did, drivers didn’t know how to use them.
“It’s part of the Motor Vehicle Act that trucks must carry chains starting Oct. 1.”
Meanwhile, some area residents went into winter panic mode with the first major dump of snow. Both Kal Tire and Big O Tire reported an “extremely busy time” as they were “swamped,” with people wanting to buy winter tires or have their summer tires changed over.
