100 Mile may lose operating room

Interior Health is reviewing the future of surgery at the 100 Mile District General Hospital.
Andrew Neuner, Thompson Cariboo Shuswap chief operating officer, said no decisions have been made; there continues to be discussions around the operating room and it will be discussed at a meeting Oct. 9.
Mitch Campsall, District of 100 Mile House mayor, said he continues to meet with Interior Health and physicians but no decision about the operating room has been made.
IH recently announced that the emergency room at the hospital would operate on a 24/7 basis but doctor response would be limited from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. when the doctor on call might only respond to urgent cases.
At that time, Dr. Jonathon Slater, Thompson-Cariboo-Shuswap medical director, said every
patient would be assessed and anyone who is sick or has concerns should absolutely go to the emergency room.
Maternity patients still need to go to the hospital in Williams Lake for delivery.
Donna Barnett, Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA, said closing
the operating room is unacceptable.
“I’ll fight to the bitter end to keep the services we have.
“I’ll do everything in my power to stand behind the staff and
the community to which needs accessibility for the facility to remain as it has for years and years,” she said.
