Over 800,000 Canadians received regular Employ-ment Insurance benefits in June, up 5.1 per cent from a month earlier.

Since the employment peak of last October, the number of regular EI beneficiaries has risen over 63 per cent. In BC almost 5,000 more people received EI in June compared to May.

Since October, the

number of people receiving EI in the province has doubled to 93,500.

In the Williams Lake area, which includes 100 Mile, there were almost twice as many people collecting EI in June 2009 compared to one year ago.

Youths under age 25 have been particularly hard hit with an increase over 100 per cent in their EI beneficiaries. The number of new claims filed in June fell almost eight per cent, the largest decline since the start of the labour market downturn.
