100 Mile wants help with fields

Soccer fields in 100 Mile House are a plus for the community but who is going to pay for the ongoing maintenance and operation of the fields?
The topic was discussed at the Cariboo Regional District meeting Aug. 28.
“I think everybody understands that 100 Mile House shouldn’t be bearing the total cost of the soccer fields or the ball fields and I believe the regional district believes that as well,” said Mitch Campsall, District of 100 Mile House mayor.
The district estimates the annual cost for each field for operations and maintenance will be approximately $25,000 per field.
The 2008 membership of the One Hundred Mile House and District Soccer Association numbered 543, of which only 72 lived in 100 Mile House.
Eighty-seven per cent of their membership lived outside the 100 Mile House boundaries.
Campsall said he’s not sure how to come up with a formula that would see the costs shared between 100 Mile House, the CRD and the soccer association.
“To pay for the soccer fields and the baseball fields and the operation and the maintenance should not be borne by 100 Mile taxpayers,” he said.
At the present time, there is an agreement with the CRD that 100 Mile pays 32 per cent of the operating costs for the arena and 38 per cent for the curling club but there is no cost-sharing arrangement on many of the regional facilities.
