Bridge Lake residents are up in arms over a school district decision to cut teachers and have two classrooms with four grades in each.

Luca Lanzoni, one of the parents, is questioning School District 27’s adherence to its own mission, vision and values.

The mission statement reads “Ensuring all students have meaningful learning experiences, empowering them to succeed in an ever-changing world.”

“I propose to change a few things but the school district has said that’s not possible because that’s the proper way it’s always been for 30 years,” he said.

Lanzoni said the district justifies having more kids in a class by a study comparing classrooms of five kids with classrooms of 20 kids and then said classes with 20 kids are better.

The district vision reads “We envision an encouraging and understanding learning environment where everyone demonstrates a sense of belonging, mastery, independence and generosity.”

Lanzoni said the parents at Bridge Lake demonstrate all of that and the district none of it.

Lanzoni said the parents are trying to be independent by fighting for their school but the district just doesn’t answer.

The district values statement reads “The pillars of support for the School District No. 27 mission and vision are characterized by the following four core operating values: respect-responsibility-kindness and caring-acceptance.”

Lanzoni said the parents and students at Bridge Lake aren’t respected.

“Kindness and caring — forget about it, that’s not their mission; their mission is saving money,” he said.

Diane Wright, district superintendent, said the district is committed to the mission, vision, values and operating principles and as a public education system works to provide the best education for all students in 29 schools within the budget they receive from the Ministry of Education.
