True patriot love: it’s in the country’s anthem and it’s what many people will show this July 1 for Canada Day.
And what better place to celebrate the nation’s birthday than a heritage site.
“The 108 Heritage Site and Canada Day just seem to fit together,” says event co-organizer Mary Ann Rutledge. She and Jessie Stewart have been dutifully planning this year’s annual celebration for a while.
Although fellow heritage site Barkerville
calls its July 1 celebration Dominion Day,
as the day was originally called, Rutledge felt Canada Day is a more well-known moniker and wanted to make
sure “everyone felt
included — this is Canada!”
This July 1 will see some new events and entertainment on site, including the ever-popular 108 Lions serving up something special.
“The 108 Lions are famous for their burgers but, this year, along with hotdogs, they’ll have bratwurst.”
Another first will
be the addition of a velcro wall, something Rutledge says kids of all ages should have a try at.
For children of the younger variety, there will be “mega things” for them, she says, including face painting, games and candy floss.
“Roxy the librarian will be there for story time, with her puppets.”
As for stage entertainment, there is truly “something for everyone,” says Rutledge.
“Mike Puhallo [cowboy poet] will be up first; he’s a great emcee,” she says. “And there will be three groups of square dancers; belly dancers; and taekwondo.”
Eclectica Choir will be leading visitors in “O Canada,” while subsequent musical groups will perform songs from several different generations.
“We tried to get a variety of entertainers to make it fun for everyone.”
The whole party kicks off at 11 a.m. and goes until 4:40 p.m.
“It’s going to be a
good day!”
