On Aug. 29, a total of 29 people had their hair cut off at Interlakes Market to raise funds for cancer research.
Interlakes Volun-teer Fire Department (IVFD), in partnership with the Canadian Cancer Society, sponsored “Balding for Dollars,” which was organized by Dorothy Townsend, Fire Chief Doug’s wife.
The drive was intended to provide support and encouragement to the
IVFD families who have or are undergoing treatment for cancer but, Doug added, “we also
want to reach out to others in the Interlakes area who are dealing with this terrible disease.”
The whole Townsend family was shorn and Lac des Roches’ John Clarkson, one of several who just a-happened by, is now bald.
Of the 29 participants, two adults and three children donated their hair to the Locks of Love program.
The Townsends expressed their gratitude to Bob and Anneli Goheen for providing the venue, and their donation; to Deka Lake and District Volunteer Fire Department for the use of chairs
and a tent; and, of course, to the two hairdressers, Sandra Zelinsky of Lakes Hair Studio and Christine Hadden of Chris’ Hair Design, who donated their time for this event.
“We had in excess of $9,000 donated, with more still to come. Interlakes residents can feel proud; once again, they’ve come through for a worthy cause, and we couldn’t be happier.
Construction
On Aug. 20 and 21, community support for Bridge Lake Elementary School (BLES) was again evidenced when a whole bunch of knowledgeable volunteers put their backs into installing the new playground. The old one was removed, except for the swing set.
Funds for the brightly coloured metal playground — which includes two slides, monkey bars, various climbing apparatus including pseudo rock wall, ladders, etc. — were raised at BLES’ Parent Advisory Committee’s (PAC) November 2008 auction.
According to PAC president Lydia de Groot, “We started at noon Friday and, at 8:30 p.m., I thought we’d be still working Sunday. But these people are tradespeople: they know how to work together, how to line things up, how to set up, so we were finished about 4 p.m. Saturday.
We had some 15 people Friday, and 25-30 on Saturday. As well as the tradesmen, we had teens who had left the school, parents of our graduates, and parents of children not yet in the school system.
We are so very, very grateful to them all.”
Special gratitude goes to Accel Enterprises, Bridge Lake Electric, Bridge Lake Store, Granberg Construction, Interlakes Building Supplies, Interlakes Market, Rusch Enterprises, South Cariboo Sand and Gravel and Kamloops’ Surf Wood Supply, all of whom generously donated material, machinery and labour.
Photo winner
Better late than never, we now
know who entered the un-named winning “Our Community” photo at Bridge Lake Fair.
Even though Mike Matfin did not receive his cash prize, he can certainly still have the credit.
