The 100 Mile District Hospice Palliative Care Society offers a helping hand to all those who can benefit from it.

The lending library at the hospice is a resource available right in 100 Mile that can be helpful for anyone experiencing grief from having lost a loved one, dealing with terminal illness or simply wanting to help someone else suffering from a loss.

The hospice also has an open house planned for Sept. 17 from 1-3 p.m and 7-9 p.m. to allow members of the community to drop in and see for themselves what resources they have available.

“We are really excited about offering this open house to our community, for the chance to invite those with an interest in becoming a hospice volunteer or training to become one,” says Gayle Dunsmuir of the Hospice Society.

“It is also an excellent opportunity to come and learn more about the hospice organization and pick up literature that may be helpful to yourself or to someone else.”

The open house will take place in the multipurpose room at the Community Health Centre in 100 Mile House, located behind the hospital.

The hospice lending library is intended for those who are grieving or dealing with terminal illness, so anyone who can possibly benefit from some support may wish to know that they have more than just books.

DVDs, videos, brochures, books and poetry are all available in the free lending library, offering insights and expressions with practical and supportive help for both the emotional and spiritual aspects of grieving.

It can be hard to focus on written works and then retain what you have read after suffering a major loss, Dunsmuir says, advising that a DVD or video can sometimes be more useful during these times.

The library has plenty of resources for families, parents to help children cope with losses as well as for children and teens themselves or adults who have lost parents.

Those who have lost a spouse can obtain some support for finding the strength to deal with difficult aspects such as saying goodbye to someone who meant everything to them.

With their resources also including trained volunteers, the hospice can help with gaining an understanding of the range of emotions impacting grieving individuals and families.

The lending library is supported through financial donations made to the 100 Mile District Hospice Palliative Care Society and is open during regular hospice hours Monday through Wednesday 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Hospice office at the Health Centre, but note you may phone them for possible access during other times.

More information on coping with a

loss, accessing the library or becoming a volunteer can be obtained at the open house or by contacting the Hospice at 250-395-7680.
