Students mark 20 years with radio’s Rode Show

Faces have changed but the routine has remained the same for the 20 years that 100 Mile Elementary School teacher Jim Price has made an annual visit to the local radio station with his class. He said that at one time, studying radio fit in with the communications component of the social studies curriculum and, though it’s no longer the case, the visit is still a fun thing to do.

One face that has remained the same is that of CKBX The Wolf announcer Larry Rode. He’s welcomed Price’s crew each year with a tour of the station and a chance for each student to say a couple of words on the air.

The routine hasn’t changed much and neither have the kids, said Price. “There’s always one special one in the group who says something he or she shouldn’t once they get the mic.”

Rode is pretty tuned in to the potential for embarrassment and covers the bases by pre-taping the student greetings. He said it generally takes at least two tries. The tape typically plays the following morning as part of the Rode Show.

Price said he’s heard some pretty wild things come out of the mouths of his students.

“One of the most memorable was a kid who gave a big hello to his dead goldfish and another one who said hello to his pet brother and sister,” he said. “They come out with some pretty bizarre things.”

Price made this year’s tour an extra special occasion by thanking Rode with an engraved plaque and a 20th anniversary cake.
