Local farmers market their final harvest

After harvesting the fruits of their labour, the South Cariboo Farmers’ Market (SCFM) in 100 Mile House will wrap up their season on Oct. 10. The market’s dedicated vendors and customers are always appreciated by the SCFM Society and president Karen Greenwood says they hope the market will continue to expand and attract new people.

“There’s a lot of room for growth; we want to put out the call to new vendors, especially food growers,” said Greenwood. “We did well with vegetable sales, but we could use more food producers in general, like baking, eggs and greenhouse vegetables. It’s a great chance for people to jump in because people are looking for more.”

The number of vendors attending over the 2008 season was approximately the same as the previous year, with an average of 20 vendors at each market. Sales were also believed to be similar to 2007, although those statistics are not formally tracked.

“In general, markets are growing across the country, local governments are taking notice and supporting farmers’ markets and the public support is there.

“We did OK in general with our crops, apart from dealing with frost every month of the summer,” said Greenwood, who is also a member of CEEDS organic growers and ranchers.

The final market of the season on Friday will feature the always popular baked potatoes, a combined effort of CEEDS and the Community Garden. This is planned as their last celebration of the United Nations Year of the Potato (2008) and to help promote local potato growing.

“It’s a nourishing food that anyone can grow, which is a powerful survival skill to learn,” said Greenwood.

The South Cariboo Farmers’ Market is open every Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. from May to early October, and is currently located at the Red Coach Inn parking lot. For more information or to apply as a new vendor, please contact Annabelle at 250-791-6644 or Karen at 250-395-3580.
